Is Mediterranean Diet The Safe and Easy Way To Loss Weight Or Another Over-Hyped Diet…
like all the others?
Every year, millions of people go on a diet to lose weight. It is difficult for many of them to lose more than a few pounds, and only few follow through with the diet and succeed in remaining at the reduced weight. The difficulty in losing weight and keeping it off leads many people to jump from one diet to another or turn to a professional or commercial weight loss program for help.
Having to count calories or points, control portions, and not be allowed to eat almost anything has never worked.
The Mediterranean diet, on the other hand, is not a specific diet plan or diet program but a collection of eating habits that are traditionally followed by the people of the Mediterranean region. At least 16 countries border the Mediterranean Sea.
Diets vary between these countries. But the common Mediterranean dietary pattern has these characteristics:
- high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds
- olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source
- dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten
- eggs are consumed zero to four times a week
- wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
Mediterranean diet research studies show:
American Heart Association has this to say:
“People who follow the average Mediterranean diet eat less saturated fat than those who eat the average American diet. In fact, saturated fat consumption is well within our dietary guidelines.
More than half the fat calories in a Mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fats (mainly from olive oil). Monounsaturated fat doesn’t raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does. The incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is lower than in the United States. Death rates are lower, too.”
European Food Information Council has this to say
“A recent study has once again confirmed that people who closely follow the Mediterranean Diet live longer than other Europeans.
Protection from chronic diseases
In a recent study the diets of more than 22,000 people living in Greece were ranked according to how closely they adhered to the traditional Greek style Mediterranean diet. During the 4 years of the study, it was found that the closer people followed the traditional diet the less likely they were to die from either heart disease or cancer, with slightly greater protection against heart disease than cancer. Overall, people following the Mediterranean diet most closely were 25% less likely to die during the study period than those who did not, suggesting that those closely following the Mediterranean diet end up dying later than those who do not”
British Medical Journal has this to say
“Mediterranean Diet Leads To Longer Life”
The Mediterranean diet is associated with longer life expectancy among elderly Europeans, finds a study published online by the British Medical Journal.
The study involved over 74,000 healthy men and women, aged 60 or more, living in nine European countries. Information on diet, lifestyle, medical history, smoking, physical activity levels, and other relevant factors was recorded.
Adherence to a Mediterranean type diet, which relies on plant foods and unsaturated fats, is associated with a significantly longer life expectancy, and may be particularly appropriate for elderly people, who represent a rapidly increasing group in Europe, authors conclude.”
The Mediterranean Diet Associated With Reduced Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease
Eating a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables and olive oil and includes little red meat, is associated with a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease, according to an article in the December 2006 print issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals
